چکیده

The evidence for other-regarding preferences is extensive. How should an individual with other-regarding preferences compare two distinct distributions of income? We show that the classical concepts of first and second order stochastic dominance are inadequate to answer this question. We develop the relevant stochastic dominance concepts for the case of the popular other-regarding preferences in Fehr and Schmidt (1999) that we call FS preferences; we consider the linear and non—linear forms of FS preferences. These new dominance concepts, that we call first and second order FS dominance provide suffi cient conditions for ranking income distributions. We show that our concepts can be extended to uncertainty and are applicable to some other models of other-regarding preferences. Our use of a discrete framework is empirically realistic and avoids measure theoretic issues arising under the continuous case.

Inequality Aversion , Efficiency , and Maximin Preferences in Simple Distribution Experiments

We present simple one-shot distribution experiments comparing the relative importance of efficiency, maximin preferences and inequality aversion, as well as the relative performance of the fairness theories by Bolton and Ockenfels (2000) and Fehr and Schmidt (1999). While the Fehr and Schmidt model performs better in a direct comparison, this appears to be due to being in line with maximin pref...

Inequality Aversion and the Long-Run Effectiveness of Monetary Policy: Bilateral versus Group Comparison

In this paper we incorporate the two most prominent approaches of inequality aversion, i.e. Fehr and Schmidt (1999) and Bolton and Ockenfels (2000) into an otherwise standard New Keynesian macro model and compare them with respect to their influence on the long-run effectiveness of monetary policy. We find that the choice for Fehr and Schmidt or Bolton and Ockenfels like preferences is of impor...

Investigating the Factors Affecting Income Inequality in Iran with Emphasis on Financial Depth and Education

The main purpose of this article is to investigate the factors affecting Iranchr('39')s income inequality in the period 1352 to 1396. For this purpose, causal relationships were first investigated using Hsiao and Toda-Yamamato causality tests. Then the effects of effective factors were estimated using error correction patterns. The results of causal tests in general showed that there is a causal...

A Little Fairness may Induce a Lot of Redistribution in Democracy

We use a model of self-centered inequality aversion suggested by Fehr and Schmidt (1999) to study voting on redistribution. We theoretically identify two classes of conditions when an empirically plausible amount of fairness preferences induces redistribution through referenda. We test the predictions of the adapted inequality aversion model in a simple redistribution experiment, and find that ...

Hayat Khan Modeling Social Preferences: A Generalized Model of Inequity Aversion Economics and Econometrics Research Institute EERI

This paper argues that a generalized model of social preferences must simultaneously pass two tests; the Variety Test (explain outcomes under variety, the V-test) and the Psychological Test (conform to psychological intuition, the P-test). It is shown that none of the models proposed to date unconditionally passes these tests. The paper extends the Fehr and Schmidt model of inequality-aversion ...
